Monthly Letter: February 2011
Faith is not desire nor is it trust. Faith is a belief so strong, so overwhelming that it becomes a lifestyle. Faith is a direction in which to live our lives; it is an experience encompassing everything we do. When lived, faith permeates all of our thoughts and our activities. Faith is not a result but a life choice that enables us live in harmony with our highest values. Consequently, unless we are up and doing, faith remains incomplete, having no means of expression in this world. A life lived in faith need not be perfect and we are required only to keep trying. Our willingness to persist is all that is needed to live in faith. If we are willing, if we are doing, faith will perfect us, line upon line, deed upon deed; one act at a time.
One of the most common misunderstandings of those of us who wish to live good and noble lives is faith has no meaningful place in our mundane affairs. Unless we can live lives of faith in the simple small ways, we will have little other opportunity to express our divinity, and no hope of meeting the larger challenges faithfully. Are not the ordinary daily activities in a normal life worthy of faithful living? If the answer is no then perhaps we should consider changing the way we live. Let us not think expressing the commonplace faithfully is easy. It is not, and we often depreciate the value of our activities simply to excuse the absence of faith in our daily affairs. If we cannot express faith at home, in our workplaces, in our social affairs, where else is left for most of us to do so? We are divine beings built around a fragment of God within each of us. There is no condition or relationship where faith is unimportant or inappropriate.
Believing in God’s will and doing little about it is whimsical at best. If we consider that God’s will is expressed in our lives as the pattern of perfection, then we have an understandable goal and a realistic yardstick by which to measure the quality of our activities. We cannot respect God, respect ourselves, and at the same time disrespect our mundane activities. Our ordinary opportunities are the rungs in the ladder, that when climbed faithfully, lead us ever Godward. We are not required to take steps along the way that are too large for us, nor to travel more quickly than we find helpful. In patience, in persistence faith will indeed perfect our lives.
In the world around us this day, we find ourselves exactly in the right place and the right time to live a life of faith. What we have or have not done along life’s path need not hold us back. We may choose wholly new ways to meet life and its challenges, large and small alike. If we believe God is the perfection of love, that we are portions of God, then we will be compelled to meet all things in love. For only in the doing will we be transformed by faith.
May God bless you with the awareness of the unimaginable faith our precious Lord has in you.
