Monthly Letter: August 2010
It is not in the bolt of lightning or the crack of thunder we will find that infinite, tender, loving kindness we call God but in gentleness, in joy, in hope, compassion, and in selflessness. Let us consider, where would our Lord wait upon us, in the terrible or in the beautiful? If all we see each day is filled with fear and doubt, it does not mean our Lord has abandoned us, but that we may not be looking carefully enough. Our God is present in all things, thus, if we try; we may find the divine all around us.
Our lives may be filled with trials and pain. For a while, at least, it may seem the darkness has overcome the light, but this is the result of the pain of the moment. When we persist we will surely pass through the darkness into the light. Then, in our surrender to Life, Light and Immortality we may find our God is truly everywhere.
However, it is important to consider God is abundant in the seemingly small things. If we search for our Lord in the agony or ecstasy of our daily affairs we are likely to miss Him entirely. In a simple smile, a soft voice, a helping hand, our Lord is fully present. In the sweet perfume of a flower, the beauty of a sunset, the rhythm of the ocean waves, the smell of the new fallen rain, we can sense the angels singing of the glory of God. What do we require of our Lord? Do we need for the heavens to fall upon us as a demonstration of His compassion, or simply to receive His tender kiss? Let us then resolve to long for His embrace throughout our day and to shower everyone we meet with that loving kindness that reflects the presence of our God.
