I AM, YOU ARE

One thing each and every one of us can say is I am aware that I am an individual. We cherish our individuality, and wish to be regarded as such. When we are treated only as a member of a group we resent this, but when we are treated as being special, we delight in the recognition. This is not so much egocentric as it is an acknowledgment that we are individual. Most of the time a smile or a nod is sufficient for any of us but sometime we desire more. Like in all good things, we can carry this to excess where it will become destructive, but a sense of individuality is essential to the well being of us all.

What have we done today to make someone else feel special? Have we smiled at anyone or by gesture acknowledged them in any way? Have we uttered a kind word, or demonstrated a genuine interest in someone else? It is so easy to do something that is so great, but because our lives are often crowded with the things we must to do, we forget to do that which we should do. It is not that recognition is so difficult, but in our busy lives it is often inconvenient. How would we feel knowing we are of little consequence to others, especially when it takes so little to be recognized?

Let us begin to slow down enough to purposely recognize others, with a smile, a nod, or a gesture. Such a simple gift can change someone’s day. If followed just by those we inspire a simple act of kindness will change the world in which we live. Can you believe so little can accomplish so much? What will we do to change the world today?
